She's Back From The Crack

Whitn3y H0ust0n - M!ll!0n D0llar B!ll ft A!icia K3ys (Mike Simonetti's Getting Stronger edit) (s3ndspac3) [source]

Dear Whitn3y, I hear ya and I feel ya on this one. Even though you take a monstrous bite off L0leatta H0ll0way's "We're Getting Stronger" you updated it nice and I'm not mad at that. I can feel your truth in this song and it's a beautiful thing. Welcome back. You smashed it.

Thanks to Alicia K3ys (who wrote this track) and Swizz Beats (producer) Whitn3y is back in a big way. Listen and agree. Yey I said it: agree (Pharoahe Monch).

Blackal!c!ous ft G!l Sc0tt Her0n - First In Flight

Blackal!c!ous ft G!l Sc0tt H3r0n - First In Flight

This song came to mind immediately when I saw this photo. "First in flight, cause all we got is rhythm and time. First in flight, we go beyond the edge of the sky".  Gil Scott-Heron has the best voice and he makes this track just like the birds make this photo. Do you think he was singing about crack when he was wrote these lyrics? Click the photo for a link to see it in full HD glory.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMES BROWN - Part 2 - The Night James Brown Saved Boston (full length doc)

The Night James Brown Saved Boston
This doc is in 8 parts. This doc is about James Brown, civil rights, Martin Luther King, Brown's televised concert in Boston after the assassination of Martin Luther King, a concert that keep the peace and helped a city heal without tearing itself apart first. A good watch.

The Night that James Brown Saved Boston had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX. It is scheduled to appear on VH1 on April 5, the 40th anniversary of the event that it marks. There is probably been no more difficult year in modern American history than 1968. There may have been no worse moment than the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis on April 4, 1968. As cities around the country were burning, James Brown managed to prevent the chaos from tearing apart the racial divided city of Boston.

The film documents that remarkable concert and the politics around it. Boston Mayor Kevin White and his colleagues almost by accident realized that by televising the James Brown concert they could keep people indoors that night prevent widespread rioting. The film is almost testimony to the power of music in general and the power of James Brown's music in particular. The film is a tribute to the Godfather of Soul and the role he would come to play in working for civil rights.

This is a film that should be seen by students everywhere in an effort to understand one of the more dramatic moments in history of a great American city. James Brown may be gone, but his music and his contributions will live on forever.[via:imdb]

Happy Birthday James Brown - more to be added check back

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMES BROWN!

Double Dee and Steinski - Lesson 2

James Brown vs Coldcut - Payback Mix

James Brown - Give It Up Turn It Loose (Latin Remix)
This was on a yellow label 12" called Ultimate Mixes. No other info was on it. I found out later that "Fantasista Re-Formation" is the official remix title. If you don't know/have this you're a sucka.

James Brown - Funky Drummer (Bonus Beat)
One of the sickest breaks of all time. A true blood hip hop backbone.

More to come. Check back later. Including some mixtapes and music.

B3gg!n - oh my...please stick to P!L00ski + Gay F!sh

P!l00sk! - B3gg!n
Bonus: Madc0n - B3gg!n
And 1: Tr3y Park3r - G@y F!sh (Kany3 W3st parody of H3artl3ss)

The power of music. What makes the latest Ad!das ad campaign work is the soundtrack provided by P!l00ski's "B3gg!n" (edit of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). Easily one of the best tracks of the past few years, it rose to #1 on the UK Dance charts after it was released in 2006 so it's not a stretch for Adidas to include this in their latest ad campaign. It got so much attention and love in Europe that Madcon from Norway ended up putting raps to it. For my money (and my party) don't fck with anything but P!looski edit. Perfection.

I do have to say thanks though. One for Pilo0ki over Madc0n usage and two to Ad!das for not using any music from the musicians, MC's and bands shown throughout the house party. Irony? Zing pow popozao. Maybe I won't be laughing when "B3gg!n" becomes the newest anthem of guidos and douches everywhere...

That does look like a good house party I must admit. A sock hop instead perhaps?

I've been sleeping on the internet. I didn't realize Beggin was fairly popular/well known. There's cover versions from some all female group in the UK and some solo female in the States and other karaoke attempts. Like Madc0n's version it's the singing that makes all these covers so weak. All three pale in comparison to Franki Valli. They rip the soul out of the song. No one in any cover version can touch Franki3 Valli so stop fcking around and stick to Pil00ski.

Speaking of being popular Am3er!ca's B3st Danc3 Cr3w gave shine to Beggin, there's terrible mash ups with Black 3y3d P3as, P!tbull, Ak0n and other shit. Stop it. Suddenly I feel like Beggin is completely over-exposed. Now I'm waiting for "Gay Fish" I mean Kany3 W3st to ruin another good track. Coming in 2011...after he catches on.

(ps. the Adam Chu vid soundtrack below is from one of the female versions - like I said...it's just not the same...)

If you must...Madc0n. Actually it's not that bad...just their attempt at the hook has me turned off. They did win something like 4 awards though due to this track's success. There's a "disco" remix and an "electro" remix. Again...if you must.

Bonus Video: Sports mash up? Basketball meets soccer. Beckham school's Kevin Garnett while shooting the house party. Bet B3ckham can't dunk on KG though. Nice kick. Reminds me of soccer skeet.

Oh yeah...the South Park "Gay Fish" episode.

K!ngs G0 F0rth - 0ne D@y

This is an extremely hard 45 to get your hands on. Single pressing limited to 500 copies only. Sold out before they were even in stores. NUTS! Listen to the video and you'll hear why. It's the next best thing to Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" and that song to me is perfection. This is the type of shit that makes me happy to be alive. Sing, dance, shout, rejoice, do what you need to do to FEEL this. One Day! I think Milwaukee just got put on the musical map.

More musical goodies coming. This blog has officially changed. No more secrets. Time to share all this great music with the world.

Black Ivory = Logg = Black Ivory = Leroy Burgess

Buzzer Beater: Black Ivory - You and I (sampled by Q-T!p for "Gett!n Up" and Madl!b for "Understand!ng (Compr3h3ns!on))

Black Ivory is Logg.  Logg is Black Ivory.  Leroy Burgess took the group from one record label to to Salsoul and in doing so had to change the name cause the other label owned the name of the group Black Ivory thus Logg was born.  Here are four tracks from, well, basically the same group.

The Rae of Wu-Tang fame sampled track is a stand-alone heater and the other is a disco classic with the added Larry Levan touch.  Apparently "I Know You Will" was recorded, extended, given the Levan treatment and put out in 2 weeks.  Wow great music doesn't have to be complicated does it? I listen the full music tracks still, but only when it's this gouda.

"Mainline" was Black Ivory's first foray into disco and "You and I" has been recently been sampled by two of hip hop's all time greats - Q-Tip and Madlib.  Black Ivory had a sh!tload more greats but here's the one's you should have known by now.

How'd I Make It To The Party 6 Months Late?

A few months (yes months - probably summertime) back I saw this video:

Ok, turns out I've been hella confused for months. Ever since I saw that video (above) in summer I thought Wajeed and Saadiq were deading PPP and starting a new band called "Abundance" with a nu-soul singer as lead and a new third member. So I've been telling people about Abundance but I was hella misinformed about PPP, "Abundance", and "On A Cloud" - the song they talk about in the video. Let's get it straight together.

"Abundance" is PPP's newest album due out in Jan 2009. "On A Cloud" is a song on that album featuring Karma Stewart on vocals. So, PPP is not dead and "On A Cloud" is the lead single which, incidently, has been out and available since early July. Where have I been for the past 6 months?? Seems like I've been puffin on my own cloud.

Now I find out Karma Stewart is featured prominently on "Abundance" and has just released her own EP today, which has been graciously made available as a free download. Karma hails from Austin, Texas (by way of Germany) but now resides in L.A. making the migration in order to be in the studio with PPP producers Wajeed and Saadiq and newest addition singer/songwriter Coultrain.

I'ma let Karma let loose in her own words:
Can you give us a quick rundown of how all the songs came to be [on the 4 track EP]?

Coultrain had written “Withdrawal” and “Waiting In The Wings” prior to me starting to put in work for The Karma EP. When I heard those 2 songs I was like “Whoa!!” He’s such a prolific writer; I was more than honored to be the voice behind the genius of his lyrics, ya know?

Shortly after, Saadiq sent me a couple of tracks that he had produced and there was one in particular that stood out to me. I had told Saadiq that i wanted some straight up funky Vanity 6 meets Prince like track. And thats exactly what he did!! Lol…

So I sent it to Coultrain and he reached into the depths of his funky soul and wrote the song “Look” which was inspired by the late Rick James. It’s actually one of my favorite songs on the EP.

Last but not least, I wrote the song “Love Games” which was produced by Waajeed (and is also one of my faves). This track is so sick I told Waajeed I had to have it!! Through listening to it, the first thing that popped into my head was “Sweet Dreams” by The Eurythmics. From that inspiration, “Love Games” was created and it was a done deal! I’m very happy with how it turned out. [source]

I slept so hard on this one, but I got it straight now. Bringing that Motown and Detroit sound back to its roots, "On A Cloud" is one of the freshest tracks of 2008! Serious.

Get Up Get Down - The Set List (-02)

Digging from the maillist archives once again. I'll try to post as many as I can tonight.

Mixtape: Defenders Of The Faith - Pandemic Mixtape Vol 1 (preview to the new album)

Checkmate and Concise are back as Defenders Of The Faith and this song is butta. "Takin It To The Top" is one of those beats that make you feel happy to be alive. For all you radio DJs bump the shit outta this one and don't forget to mark it as Cancon. And don't forget to give it spins during SoCan weeks. Support homegrown talent - always.

Josh Martinez has always been a favorite of mine. I even got to DJ for J Mart and Sleep aka Chicharones at the world reknown Jazz Cafe in London some years ago while I was backpacking in Europe. Then went on a tour through Scotland, handed keys to a car, given a map and itinerary and let loose. Driving on the right side is some shit, and daam if we didn't almost crash a hundred times on that tour (big up Louvens - you almost killed us a few times yo). Those were good times. Off his new album "World Famous Sex Buffet". Produced by Skratch Bastid. Some more Cancon for you radio DJs.

Lupe's on a remix tip and he's trying to make amends for the VH1 Hip Hop Honors A Tribe Called Quest Fiasco he created. If you forgot (or missed it) Lupe forgot the lyrics to the Tribe verse he was reciting. Nothing special (per se) until he went online and said that he never listened to Tribe and didn't count them amongst his influences. Seems like's all forgotten and forgiven as Q-Tip appears on this remix.

Kid Sister's newest track to her upcoming album "Dream Date". I think that a Diplo or A-Trak or Flosstradamus or MSTRKT remix or...there`s probably gonna be a remix of this...if there isn`t one already.

Way before T-Pain and the auto-tune and Kanye`s Love Lockdown and Snoop's Sensual Seduction there existed the true OG`s of the sound - Zapp & Roger. They used the Vocoder to perfection and made it their signature sound. Computer Love is a classic - amongst many classics in their discography - and used by Redman, Biggie and others. Bonus is "Be Alright" which become "I Get Around" by 2Pac.
