EMYND (pronounced "E-Mind") & BO BLIZ are a DJ and production duo based in Philly that have made their mark by throwing uncompromising parties that attract a truly diverse audience made up of people from all ages, ethnicities, and income brackets. They have traveled extensively showcasing their talents and, most notably, make up two thirds (with Dan the Swede) of Phillys now-defunct legendary party "White Ts & White Belts," boasting an impressive line up of performing guests from DJs like Diplo, Low Budget, Scottie B, and Blaqstarr to major rappers like Rocafella and Def Jam recording artists Freeway, Peedi Crakk, Beanie Sigel, and Slick Rick.

They are renown for the unique ability to play a wide variety of dance musics without resorting to pretenses of irony and/or kitsch and have proven themselves to be forward thinking producers with releases on a variety of labels like FLAMIN HOTZ, EQUINOX, Diplo's MAD DECENT, FULLY FITTED, the legendary Baltimore Club label UNRULY RECORDS, and forthcoming work on their own record label CROSSFADED BACON.

Playing all regional styles of hip-hop from any conceivable time period--from traditional NY Bangers to Crunk to True-School-House-Party-Anthems to Hyphy to New Orleans Bounce EMYND & BO BLIZ have no problem transitioning from the hip-hop and dancehall they grew up on into more eccentric tastes like fully-fleshed out Motown sets, classic House, aggressive Bmore Club Music/Philly Party Music sets, or even extensive Punk sets. Additionally, their own original tracks have become staples on the set lists and mixtape selections of some of the most respected and celebrated DJs on earth, gaining support from a motley collection of folks like Diplo, Sinden, Annie Mac, Nadastrom, DJ Fashen, Stretch Armstrong, Scottie B, K-Swift, DJ Eli, Tittsworth, The Jokers of The Scene, Cosmo Baker and the Rub DJs, the Top Billins DJs, and DJ Benzi amongst others.

EMYND has recently completed a Bmore Club song with Rocafella artist Young Chris from the Young Gunz and is working on a variety of remixes and projects as well as solo record while BO BLIZ is currently working on his own EP for UNRULY RECORDS.

BIO:
With a won ton stuck on a chopstick in one hand and serato in the other, Disoriental was born yesterday and began djing and opening for acts like Superstar Dj Aoki, Tiesto, and many more high profile celebrities. Really? With some other bios you would think the reader was the one conceived last night. No, Disoriental (Jon Chung) comes from humble beginnings watching Goonies on the family's betamax, chilling, growing, eating rice.

Disoriental's real dj career began when he was introduced to turntables by his neighborhood friend. Hooked like cooked crack so began his journey into the world of djing. Along the way Disoriental lived out his calling as an aZn scratch nerd calling, winning a few DMC and local battles, making a few successful mixtapes (featured in URB, Mixwell), immersing himself in spinal research, as well as growing facial hair (the latter taking several years). He learned the in and out, and the in and outs of the industry, playing alongside a bunch of really good djs, travelling here and there and generally being his Chinese parents nightmare (Shout outs to So-Real crew, Randy Jackson thank you).

Lately, technology and the interwebs have allowed Disoriental to branch out even more into the world of music production. His edits and remixes have appeared on the likes of playlists from local heroes Smalltown DJs and Eh Team Djs' Pump, all the way to Cosmo Baker and Dj Eleven from the Rub. He's honed his party skills at numerous successful residencies around town as well as winning the title of "Calgary's Best Party Rocker" during the Red Bull 3-Style competition.

Today when hes not changing his dogs diapers or sitting at his desk at school watching hood videos, Disoriental is still setting booty traps, entertaining people with iron chef - like skills combined with the grandoise of the Beijing olympics. Feel the magic.

It's Yours - White Label and Hard To Find

lonerangerqtipitsyours

The Lone Ranger aka Q-T!p - It's Yours / z/s/h/a/r/e
And 1: T-La Rock - It's Yours / z/s/h/a/r/e

Oh shit it's classic time. T La Rock has historically been slept on yet regarded as one of the best MCs in the game. Q-T!p paid homage back in '98 to one of the highly revered and respected tracks in hip hop history. Wanting to avoid trouble with his then label "Jive" he released this 12" under the gise of The Lone Ranger. There wasn't much info on this record other than the fact that it was Q-T!p. The belief was that this was Q-T!p's first solo record and pointed to the end of A Tribe Called Quest. There was abundant speculation at this point regarding an eventual break up and solo projects from both Phife Dawg and Q-T!p followed in subsequent years. The Lone Ranger did not stick long and Q-T!p remained Q-T!p. Regardless this was a hard 12" to come by and had no promo nor press to back it when it dropped.

I bought this 12" for a modern take on a old school classic. Undoubtedly T La Rock's original version had sounded a little "out-dated" beatwise by the '98s and grabbing this 12" allowed me to drop it alongside other current jams and re-introduce such a classic to the next generation of hip hop heads. In any case, T!p smashes the cover version.
In 1984, T La Rock and his brother Special K (of The Treacherous Three) wrote "It's Yours," which was the first song ever produced by Rick Rubin and his fledgling Def Jam company. "It's Yours" 12" (Cat. PT-104) was the very first Def Jam record. Although some might argue that LL Cool J's "I Need a Beat" 12" was the first, this is not exactly true. The "It's Yours" recording was something Rick Rubin put out on the Streetwise Records subsidiary label Party Time Records, a few months before joining forces with Russell Simmons. The song was the first single to feature a Def Jam Recordings logo, but it was released through producer Arthur Baker's independent label Party Time, which was the hip hop division of his dance music label Streetwise Records. The recording was never part of Def Jam’s collection of master recordings.

In a 1996 interview with The New York Times, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons commented about the effect T La Rock and "It's Yours" had on the early hip hop scene:

“It ["It's Yours"] was big, big in the underground. T [La Rock] started the trend and a new direction in hip-hop. He used 40-letter words. He created a special poetry. LL Cool J was the second release on the label. He borrowed ideas and attitude from T. LL would agree.”

The influence of T La Rock's "It's Yours" has been seen in sampling by hip-hop group Public Enemy in "Louder than a Bomb" from its 1988 release It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back; emcee Nas in "The World is Yours" from his seminal 1994 album Illmatic; by many sample-based house-music tracks by Todd Terry, and by emcee and DJ Edan in "Fumbling over Words that Rhyme" from his 2005 album Beauty and the Beat. The song was later in the soundtrack of the video game Grand Theft Auto IV, in the old school hip hop radio station the Classics 104.1. It was also used by the Beastie Boys on their song Paul Revere off their famous 1986 album Licensed to Ill, an album also produced by Rick Rubin off Def Jam.

On the strength of "It's Yours," T La Rock was signed by Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records and released two albums: Lyrical King (From the Boogie Down Bronx in 1987, and On a Warpath in 1989. Lyrical King was produced by T La Rock and DJ Louie Lou, while Todd Terry produced On a Warpath. [source]

Sant0g0ld - Sh0ve !t Remix ft 3-6 Maf!a

Sant0g0ld - Shove It Remix ft 3-6 Maf!a / z/s/h/a/r/e

It took me a few days to throw this up. I didn't like this at first. I'm sooooo enamoured - serious. - by the Switch remix of this track that it's the only version I play. Didn't need to play any other version, but after a few days of marinating this 3-f Maf!a remix has grown on me.

Sant0g0ld has been given a crunk re-fix with the addition of 3-6 Maf!a and a brand new beat. Rumour has it that this is going to be a B-Side to the official Jay-Z "Go Hard" 12inch. Funniest thing about this remix is the hip hop blogs and heads who are now "gonna fak with her". Welcome to the party hip hop heads...you're about 2 years late.

Keys n Krates - The Longest Night

www.needlekineval.blogspot.com 2

Keys n Krates - The Longest Night / z/s/h/a/r/e / mediafire

Conceived early in 2008, Toronto's Keys N Krates bring new meaning to the dancefloor remix. The group consists of frontman, Eh! Team DJ Jr-Flo, eclectic soul musician and keyboardist Matisse, and drummer Tune. Their set blends hip-hop and electronic instrumentation with party breaks and world class turntablism, creating live renditions of favorite party tunes thats something to be both seen and heard.

Recently reviewed by URB Magazine as standouts during New York's CMJ Music Fest, the group has landed some high profile shows, playing URB Magazines Holiday Party and with Questlove of The Roots at the famous SOB's in Manhattan.

With DJs being at the forefront of live performances in 2008, Keys N' Krates is ready to re-introduce their audiences to the sound of true live music with a unmistakably unique party flip.

Originally from Toronto and now living, recording, and showcasing in New York this 3 member band breaks ground as a remix concept band. If you want to desribe it in words simply put it's a DJ led band. Imagine a DJ rocking a party but there's a live band jamming and vibing and remixing shit live on the spot with the DJ. Like, whoa. That's Keys n Krates and that's dope.

(edit - what happens if L!0nel R!tch!e, M!cha3l and Jan3t Jackson, Glor!a Est3fan, and D3p3ch3 Mod3 had a baby? You'd get the love child of "The Longest Night")

Pn@u - B@by (Br3@kb0t Rem!x) | z/s/h/a/r/e | z/i/p/p/y/s/h/a/r/e

From Australia and this remix is probably one of my favourite songs of 2008. It's been on enough top of lists. It has lasting quality and it still makes me think of summertime as if it were BBQ time. Bring in the children bring on the keys, now let the drums go. Perfect. Serve immediately.

Who doesn't have this already? Maybe you. And maybe you too, who can't find it anymore. You're welcome.

(*edit: my new year's resolution is to serve it up fresh and easy. just me. and all of me, not just a little slice. c'mon - let's go!)

Anyone Wanna Go To Boston? Roots vs Antibalas Soundclash

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - Che Che Cole (Makossa Remix) | z/s/h/a/r/e
Bonus: Antibala Afrobeat Orchestra - Che Che Cole (album) | z/s/h/a/r/e
And 1: Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe - Che Che Cole (original version) | z/s/h/a/r/e

What!? The Roots vs Antibalas?? As a live experiment? Daaang. Serious.
Red Bull Sound Clash is a totally unique clash of sounds, styles and creativity, where two bands don’t battle each other, but instead collaborate live on stage to create an innovative music performance.

The Red Bull Sound Clash Boston experience features two bands – The Roots and Antibalas – with different music styles (Hip Hop and Afrobeat) facing-off on two stages positioned on opposite ends of the venue with the audience in the middle. In a series of four rounds, the bands perform various tasks—some rehearsed, some improvised—to showcase the range of their musical abilities. The audience participates in the back-and-forth exploration between the bands by judging each round.[source]
I wanna hear them do a live collabo - imagine a 7 minute afro-burner of The Seed? How about a hip hop version of "Che Che Cole (Makossa Remix)"? I'll take 26 of those and 3 hours of that. Who wants to go to Boston for the 29th of Jan?

Che Che Cole was originally a Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe song from 1972. Latin in original form Antibalas did a remake/cover of the song and later had a remix done on the Makossa tip to move it closer to Afrobeat. The Roots vs Antibalas is going to be such a crazy combo I think I need to be at this show. Serious.

Motown And Disco Soul Meets The Symphony - Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele, & Tweet

MDR Symphony Orchestra ft Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele & Tweet - Midnight Train To Georgia | z/s/h/a/r/e
Bonus: MDR Symphony Orchestra ft Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele & Tweet - I Got A Woman | z/s/h/a/r/e
And 1: MDR Symphony Orchestra ft Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele & Tweet - Loving You | z/s/h/a/r/e

No joke. I grew up listening to classical music. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was my favourite growing up - probably because of the movie Amadaeus. I know classical music aficianados are supposed to hold "Pachelbel's Canon" (aka "Canon in D minor") as the piece da resistance but I was enamoured by the visual stimulation that tied elements of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik to the hoofs of the horses in that particular movie.

Fact is I didn't discover pop music until I was in grade 7. No lie. Serious. Then in grade 9 I discovered hip hop and my friend Walid put me onto underground hip hop and radio shows and I would stay up all throughout the night, recording radio shows and flipping the tapes religiously from Side A to Side B at 45 minutes each time. Sticking in the another tape a 1.5 hours and doing it again 45 minutes later. Week in and week out, twice a week or more. Religulous. My "Krispy Biskit" radio show collection is still sitting at my parent's house. "Krispy Biskit" was the biggest influence in the Vancity hip hop scene DJ'ed by the legendary and influential Kilo-Cee. Another big radio collection is my "Guerrilas In The Mix" which we always thought was "Guerillas In The Midst". Either way it was a hella dope radio show AND it was hosted by the one and only - the now heavyweight hip hop producer - Jake One. I gotta dig those all up one day. They were both huge collections (although my parents have thrown a bunch of them away - heartbreak).

Hip hop was my front door into the world of music. From mainstream to underground, soul, funk, and jazz samples, to the art of diggin, to purchasing records, to learning the piano to two turnables and a mixer and starting my DJ'ing life, to just reading about and immersing myself in and going in haaaaard at music and discovering more and more music, and seeing the connections and the foundations from one genre to the next, to the formation of new genres that both came and took over (hip hop) to those that came and sorta never broke through (like happy hardcore and goa trance - I wasn't a raver back in the day, I just knew people who were - I was working in campus/community radio and that's where I was introduced). From there music changed with the times and I was part of those changes and still am today.

But getting back to classicial music, it was my music of choice for a large part of my early life and one that I fully appreciated...even taking a class on classical music when I was in university - I think it was called "Classical Musical Appreciation". I also took a class on world music called "FPA 304 - World Music" (SFU) or something like that with Sal Ferreras. He's a Vancity based percussionist that is the most detailed filled walking encyclopedia on world music I had never imagined to exist. He was the Encyclopedia Brown of World Music. He drew the historical chronology through the social relationships of class/welfare/status/wealth/influence, from migrational movements of immigrants (imperial slaves), influences of the political climate and architecture of particular relevance and time, and the technological limitations and improvements of musical instruments that shaped, formed, and connected all parts of the world to each other - all within an analysis of world music! It truly was brilliant and probably THE BEST course I will have ever taken in my life. No joke no lie. Ever. I even convinced 5 friends to take the course, who in turn after taking the course spread the word even further, and word spread quickly that it became the elective of choice of fellow CMNS students. If that course is still available - take it. Gaaat daam.

So this is something I can truly appreciate. It ain't no George (of Seinfeld) getting all bitter that his world's are colliding. This is some shit yeah of oh shit! & hell yeah! The harmony of the symphony with the voices of Joy Denalane, Bilal, Dwele, and Tweet makes my ice cubes melt and my bacon fry. I would absolutely LOVE to see this live.

The Dresden Soul Orchestra or MDR Symphony is based in Germany and Joy Denalane is apparently a huge German soul singer. My guess is that Joy come up with the concept and worked with the Symphony on this project to bring the classic sounds of Motown and orchestra to each other. I think this worked amazingly well and I would love to hear a second edition where they get deeper and go harder into the lesser known, digger's style, gems of soul. I'm not sure this would work with any other genre. I mean Prince Paul did try his "Hip Hopera" but I don't think that turned out did it? Enjoy this new take on Motown and this new excitement about classical music. I think the tracklist might actually be entirely from the Larry Gold discography. Lovely indeed.

Pick up the album to hear the entire thing - it's a keeper from start to end. It has 26 tracks and includes tracks such as "Sir Duke", "ABC", "You're All I Need To Get By", "Love Train" and other classic Motown and disco soul tracks. Visual stimulation below.

Solomon isn't your everyday magician. He doesn't know how to pull a white rabbit out of a hat or your 6 of Clubs from the deck. But what the Bay Area-based music wizard can do is ELEVATE you on the dance floor. This was clear from the time of his first gig in '89, when he used nothing more than a tape deck and cd player to transform a middle school prom into a raging pre-adolescent night club that terrified the chaperones. Ever since, he's spread his innovative sound in clubs from here to China.

Solomon's specialty is something he always called "Pop Turntablism." It's a niche of music that fuses scratching, beat juggling, word play, and live remixing with an eclectic mix of funk, soul, hip hop and rock tracks. It's an emerging genre now popularly known as "Mashup." And within this community, Solomon shines.

As a producer, he was among an elite group of DJs and producers comprising the Crooklyn Clan Vault. The website has become one of the main distribution hubs for DJ mashups and has become an invaluable tool for promoting Solomon's unique and original production sound. His musical stylings have captured the imagination of some of today's biggest music stars and he's recently performed with The Black Eyed Peas, Digital Underground, De La Soul, Ozomotli, Groove Collective, Jurassic 5, Lyrics Born, Patti Labelle, DJ AM and Dan the Automator - just to name a few. And naturally, he's caught the eye of club promoters everywhere.

Solomon has residencies all over the Western US. From San Fran to Sacto, San Diego to Scottsdale. And last year, he teamed up with singer/songwriter Chris Clouse for an insanely popular Thursday night show at the Hard Rock Hotel. The LV Weekly raved that it was "Vegas' Best Kept Secret." They've brought the party back to SF where they tear down the walls every Wednesday night at the super chic subterranean lounge, Slide. And in case you don't like waiting in long lines outside a club he's spinning at, you can always just buy a ticket to a Golden State Warriors home basketball game. Solomon has been the team's resident DJ for the past six years, responsible for elevating the fans' spirits when the team sinks to new lows. Sounds like a job for a magician indeed.

Wow. Serious. DJ SOLOMON's gonna tear SHINE down Friday - his "DJs Without Borders" mix opened the MADONNA "Sweet & Sticky" World Tour, he's featured on the latest Serato "Respect Worldwide" ad campaign, resident DJ for the Golden State Warriors for 6 years, and is part of the Crooklyn Clan Vault. Serious indeed.
